David and Nicole Roof moved their family from New York to South Dakota in 2021 and bought the long-running Ardy's Bakery in Clear Lake, along with its recipes, from former owner Ardis Nielsen. The Clear Lake bakery became the base for Downtown Donuts, and on Oct. 24, 2025 the Roofs opened a second Downtown Donuts storefront at 21 S. Broadway in downtown Watertown, with doughnuts baked in Clear Lake and sold in Watertown Thursday through Saturday.
