Jim and Marcia Sparks opened The Bakery Unlimited on Winterset's town square in 1984, with Marcia's recipes at the center; their daughter Katie Sparks runs it today. The apple fritters use Madison County apples. In USA TODAY's 10Best readers' poll for best doughnut shop in America, the bakery placed fifth in 2024 and third in both 2025 and 2026, against shops from far larger cities.
