One of five surviving shops from Russell C. Wendell's Big Do-Nut Drive-In chain, a Southern California drive-in donut chain that grew to about ten locations across the 1950s, each topped with a giant rooftop donut. Wendell was a donut-machine salesman who sold the shops individually in the 1970s to concentrate on his Pup 'n' Taco fast-food chain. Dale's still operates under the original giant donut on South Atlantic Avenue in Compton.
Independent single shop; Big Do-Nut locations were sold to separate owners in the 1970s, but the current owner of Dale's is not named in any source opened.

Worth the drive for the building
A huge concrete-and-steel donut sits on the roof, angled toward the intersection so drivers could see what was for sale from blocks away. It has been there since the 1950s.
