Founded by Norman Kidd in downtown Blacksburg next to the Lyric Theatre, the shop began under the Spudnuts name before taking the Carol Lee name from a former Kansas doughnut-mix franchise. It moved to North Main Street in 2001 to escape rising downtown rents. Kidd's daughters Sherree Surface and Melinda Strager now run the family business.
