Harold Kempf, an Evansville native, opened the first Donut Bank on First Avenue on July 18, 1967 after developing his donut formula with a Chicago flour company; the shop flooded within two weeks and had to be rebuilt. Stores followed on Washington Avenue in 1974, St. Joseph Avenue in 1976, Green River Road in 1981 and Diamond Avenue in 1989, then Newburgh, Princeton and Henderson, Kentucky in 2014. Harold's sons Chris, Ben and Joe Kempf took over in 2006 and opened the eleventh store on Vieth Lane in 2025 alongside a logo refresh.
