The Emerson Avenue shop opened as 'Donut Castle' in 1973; J.R. Parsons and his wife Darlene took it over in 1977 and renamed it J.R.'s Donut Castle. J.R. Parsons died in November 2016 and his son Aaron Parsons, who started working there at age 10, now runs the second-generation family business with the original recipes.
