Founders Kevin and Angel Moran started Guru Donuts in 2012 out of a North End garage, selling at secret speakeasy-style events and an occasional Boise Farmers Market stall before opening a storefront on Capitol Boulevard. The shop moved into the historic Idanha Building at 10th and Main in 2016. The founders sold the business in 2019 and it changed hands again in 2023; a later Eagle location closed in 2025, leaving the downtown Boise original.

Independently owned; founders sold in 2019 and new owners took over in 2023 per the Idaho Statesman (March 2025); Krystle McLaughlin was named as owner by Idaho Press in 2021.
