Mark Isreal began frying doughnuts from his grandfather's recipe in a Lower East Side basement in 1994, delivering them by bicycle to coffee shops before opening the Grand Street storefront in 2000. Widely credited with starting New York's artisanal doughnut wave, it now runs five shops across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
