Rebecca Roth Gullo, a former political staffer who opened The Gallows gastropub in the South End in 2010, launched Blackbird Doughnuts a few doors away at 492 Tremont Street in 2015. The shop expanded to Fenway in 2017, Harvard Square and Brighton in 2018, Newton Centre in 2019, Beacon Hill in 2020 and Watertown's Arsenal Yards, with Sally's Sandwiches layered into several shops; a High Street Place food-hall stall opened in 2022 and has since closed. In April 2026 the group announced a combined Blackbird, Sally's and Gallows space at Clippership Wharf in East Boston.
