Shannon and Ken Patten opened the first Legendary Doughnuts in May 2010 in Auburn's Lakeland Hills shopping center, inspired by a rained-out family trip to Oregon that ended at Voodoo Doughnut and a wish to make higher-quality, fun doughnuts closer to home. The Tacoma Sixth Avenue shop followed in 2012, Covington in 2014 and Federal Way in 2016, and the company has grown to seven company-run stores, past the couple's original goal of five. In April 2026 Shannon Patten publicly objected to Voodoo Doughnut opening a block from her Tacoma shop.
