A pink-box shop at 16th and Santa Monica Boulevard opened in 1981 by Khmer refugee couple Lee and Kong Tao, later run by their children Sean and Mayly. It rose to fame in the 2010s for photogenic croissant and waffle hybrids after Mayly Tao, the self-styled Donut Princess, returned in 2012 and tripled sales through social media. The family sold the shop in 2021 when the parents retired; the new management has kept up the large, inventive selection.
