Rodney and April Johnson opened Backwoods Donuts in 2026 in the former Burger Express building on US Highway 2 in Sandpoint. Rodney spent more than 20 years in the dental industry before the switch, and April had worked in donut shops for years, decorating, frying and managing shops in Utah and South Dakota before the couple moved to North Idaho. The planned January 2026 opening slipped to a spring soft opening because of equipment problems and interior renovation.
