Ernest Ferrell opened the first Ferrell's donut shop in Santa Cruz in 1949. In 1975 he opened a shop in Live Oak and named it Original Ferrell's to set it apart from the Ferrell's run by his son, then sold it to the Morse family in 1976. The Morses added Scotts Valley in 1978 and Aptos in 1980, and run the three shops separately from the other Ferrell's shops in town.
