Leigh Kellis started The Holy Donut in Portland in 2012 with help from her parents, and the family still runs it, with brother-in-law Jeff Buckwalter as co-owner and president. Maine potatoes go into every donut, giving the crumb a dense, moist texture. The Park Avenue and Commercial Street shops in Portland draw the lines; Scarborough is the locals' workaround, after the Brunswick store closed in August 2026.
Open since 2012
Family-owned: founder Leigh Kellis (now creative director) and co-owner/president Jeff Buckwalter, her brother-in-law, per the Portland Press Herald (2023) and The Bollard (May 2026); no sale to an outside company found.
