Darrell Mead opened the Old Fashioned Donut Shoppe in Crystal in February 1980, after moving from Brainerd, where he had worked in a bakery as a high-school junior. The shop has stayed in the Mead family, with son Jeremy managing, and marked its 40th year in 2020 by selling coffee and a doughnut for 40 cents.
