A Glazed & Amused thread

Donuts After Dark

The shops that get going when everything else closes.

The donut is filed as a breakfast food. But a whole layer of American donut culture runs at night: shift workers, teenagers, bar crowds, and bakers starting before midnight.

These shops either open at night, never close, or do their real business after dark. They are nowhere near each other — that is the nature of a thread rather than a route. Take them one at a time, whenever you are near one at an unreasonable hour.

Not a drive. A list of places to be awake in.

How far apart they are

Pins only, no order — city-level positions.

The shops

  • Krumpe's Do-Nut Shop

    Hagerstown, MD

In business since 1934, and open at night rather than in the morning. Donuts are ordered at a window.

The smell of frying dough through the neighbourhood locals call Donut Alley has pulled four generations of Hagerstown teenagers out of their houses.

  • Back Door Donuts

    Oak Bluffs, MA

The Kennebec Avenue bakery dates to 1948, but the legend began when bakers started selling hot donuts out the back door at night.

The purple door opens at 7pm. Seasonal, and reachable only by ferry.

Known for: Apple fritters — around 60,000 a season

  • Donald's Donuts

    Zanesville, OH

Production starts at 12:30am. Donald and Barbara Warne opened the shop in 1960; their son Tom Warne has run it since 2015.

In 2025, voters in a major national poll named it the best donut shop in America. Over 40 varieties, most around a dollar.

  • M&M Donuts

    Los Angeles area

A Cambodian-owned shop that closes at noon and then reopens at 9pm, drawing hour-long drive-thru lines at 11pm.

    Known for: Hot blueberry donuts

Written about, not listed. We have not confirmed which city this shop is in, so there is no listing yet.
